KERALA – HOUSEBOATS - INDIA
Kerela Houseboats India - Barges originally used for carrying the rice harvest from the Backwaters to Cochin were saved from falling into disrepair by converting them into houses. These are poled along like a punt, and are used to provide a tranquil way for tourists to visit the Backwaters. The concept has proved to be so successful that ‘rice barges’ are now built as specifically for this purpose.
Meals are prepared and served on board while the guests sunbathe, read or watch the world go by. At night the vessel drops anchor in one of the lakes or in a quite offshoot. The double bedroom has an en suite bathroom and the rattan armchairs mean that you can read in comfort.
Many of the vessles have an engine in order to get to less well known areas of the Backwaters. Oil lamps have given way to solar powered lighting and many can offer more than one bedroom.
This is an ideal way to travel around the Backwaters. You can watch the people going about their daily business – their hair or their clothes, shopping from the fishmonger in his small boat. See the boats heavily laden with building materials. Count how many different birds you can see.
