Sarawak - Land of the Hornbills!!

for more info click here

Situated on the north-western coast of Borneo, the land of the hornbills, intricate rivers and pepper beckons the visitor with its rich rainforests and the diverse lifestyles of its indigenous peoples.

The capital, Kuching, is a thriving riverside town on the Sarawak River.   A modern city with shopping malls and an elegant Riverside Walk where you can take an after dinner stroll.  Just behind the Riverside Walk is a street of souvenir and antique shops.  Prices are high but bargaining is normal.

The IBAN make up one third of the population.  Their traditional home the Longhouse, a wooden structure built on stilts, is usually situated near to the river for fishing while their crops are grown on the slopes of the nearby hills.  Each family in the Longhouse has their own room while the open area running the length of the house is used for communal activities.  Visitors are made very welcome and they take pleasure in sharing with you their rice wine and rice whiskey while the youngsters demonstrate their tradition dance.  The IBAN also make a variety of handicrafts which are sold at the local markets but can be purchased at the Longhouse.

Sarawak is also the home of the Proboscis monkeys.  Take a full day excursion to Bako Park.  This involves a 30 minute boat ride on the South China Sea and a trek through changing landscapes from mangrove swamps to dense rainforest to see these monkeys in their natural habitat.
